Play Therapy

Healing and Connection through Play

Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed approach that helps children express emotions, process experiences, and build coping skills through play, their natural language.

Rather than relying only on words, children use toys, art, games, and imagination to communicate what may feel confusing or overwhelming.

At Roots to Ground Counseling, play therapy offers a supportive space where children can feel safe, seen, and understood while learning healthy ways to navigate emotions, relationships, and life changes.

We proudly serve children ages 7 & up in Colorado Springs and surrounding communities.

How Does Play Therapy Work?

A Grounded, Personalized Approach

At Roots to Ground Counseling, play therapy is never one-size-fits-all.

We tailor each child’s experience to their developmental stage, personality, and unique needs. Sessions are guided by your child’s comfort level and strengths, honoring their individuality while gently supporting growth.

Our approach is trauma-informed, compassionate, and collaborative, working alongside caregivers to help children feel empowered, understood, and supported both in and out of sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do parents attend sessions?

Sometimes. Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may be child-only, caregiver-only, or include both. We collaborate with families to determine what feels most supportive.

How long can play therapy take?

Every child is different. Some notice changes within a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Progress depends on goals, consistency, and your child’s unique healing process.

What ages benefit from play therapy?

Play therapy is most commonly used with children ages 3–12, though elements can also support teens.

Roots to Ground services ages 7 & up. We adapt techniques to match your child’s developmental level.

Will I know what my child is working on?

Yes. While your child’s privacy is respected, we regularly check in with caregivers to share themes, progress, and ways you can support your child at home.

What concerns can play therapy help with?

Play therapy can support anxiety, behavioral challenges, emotional regulation, trauma, grief, family transitions, social difficulties, and self-esteem concerns.

Can play therapy be combined with other approaches?

Absolutely. Play therapy is often integrated with other modalities such as mindfulness, family systems, or cognitive-behavioral strategies to best support your child and family.
